10 Simple Ways To Take Care of Yourself Everyday

Greetings! Often when you’re a new mom, single, and working a full-time job, self-care gets lost. It becomes hard to find the time, and sometimes the cash, to do anything for yourself. I’ll admit, I struggled in this area. I struggled mostly because I viewed self-care as a big chunk of time instead of smaller moments that I can find throughout the day.

I know it’s absolutely necessary to make sure I take care of myself, but I find that I don’t necessarily want to spend hours away from my daughter if I don’t have to. Perhaps that is because I spend enough time away from her when I go to work. I know, I know….Moms need love too! So I’ve come up with 10 simple ways to take care of myself everyday. All of them are either free or require very little money. Bonus…they won’t mean I have to spend hours away from my little one.

So I thought I would share these simple things with you in case you’re like me, and are finding it daunting to find the time in the midst of working and child care to take care of yourself.

Alright! Here we go!

Take A Nap

Sleep can be an elusive thing, especially when there’s a toddler involved. However elusive it is, you must capture it when you can. You hear all the time when you have a newborn to sleep when your baby sleeps. Well I have not been above taking a nap with my 14 month old and I’m much better for it.

Pamper Yourself

This doesn’t have to mean a full on spa day. A little pampering goes a long way. Give yourself a facial, manicure, or pedicure. Get a quick massage. Anything that will give your self-confidence a boost or rejuvenate you will do.

Take A Bath/Shower with Essential Oils

I’m not really a bath person. I prefer long hot showers. The good news is that essential oils work in both the bath or the shower so everybody wins!

In the shower you can add a few drops to your body wash as you go, or you can make the body wash in bulk by adding 48 drops of essential oil to 4 oz of body wash. Lavender oil is great for calming and relaxing. Peppermint oil will give you a refreshing, invigorating shower experience.

If you’re going to use oils in your bath be sure to use a carrier oil. Otherwise, the essential oils will just sit on top of the bath water and adhere directly to your skin. That could be pretty uncomfortable and we don’t want that do we? Coconut, olive, or jojoba oil are all good options. Lavendar, chamomile, and rose are all good oils to add to your  bath. One last tip…wait until you’ve finished running the bath, turn off the water, then add the oils. You’ll get the most benefit from the oils this way.

Audiobooks

To me, there’s no greater instant escape than into the pages of a good book. I used to have all the time in the world to sit down and read a book. I don’t have that kind of time anymore. Enter audiobooks! Audiobooks have changed the game for me. I have the pleasure of getting lost in a great story, but I don’t have to sit and watch it on TV or sit down to actually read it. I can now do it while I’m driving, cooking, doing laundry, cleaning, or grocery shopping. I use Audible and I absolutely love it! I love to listen to British Chick-Lit, but that’s just me! An Audible membership gets you millions of books in tons of categories right at your fingertips. Here’s a link to start a free trial. If you love to read, but can’t find the time, Audible is the answer. Enjoy!

Get Some Fresh air

It’s very easy to get caught up in all the things to do around the house. The day can pass by very quickly and suddenly it’s night and you’ve been inside all day. But try and find the time to go outside for just a little while. A little fresh air can be just the thing to re-energize, clear your head, and re-focus. It’s easy too! As long as the weather permits, grab your little one and take a walk, go to the park, or just let them play outside for a bit. It’ll be good for you and good for them too!

Meditate

In the moments before my daughter wakes up and before the day begins, there is peace and quiet. This, I have found, is the perfect time to meditate, pray, and strengthen my spirit to deal with whatever the day is going to bring. It doesn’t have to be hours. In the past I would grab my phone and spend a few minutes with email and social media. I’ve since replaced looking at my phone with a few minutes of quiet time in the morning. You’d be surprised what a difference it makes when you take care of your spirit before you start the day.

Make Something

I love to bake things from scratch. I find the process relaxing. I also get great pleasure out of watching people enjoy what I’ve made. This also works with cooking. If you are particularly stressed, make bread and knead it by hand. It’s the perfect way to let off some steam and you get a tasty loaf of bread at the end! Win!

Get Creative

Another good way to relieve tension and stress is to find a creative outlet. I created this blog and my YouTube channel, but it could be anything. Crafting, knitting, crocheting, painting, writing, playing music, and singing are just a few options. Find something you love and spend a little bit of time during the day doing that.

Unplug

If you’re a hardcore techie like me, you use your phone or tablet for everything. So asking you to disengage for an extended period during the day is huge. But try it anyway. I was that hardcore techie. I haven’t completely abandoned technology, obviously. I do, however, carve out the time everyday to unplug from my phone and TV. For me, I’ve made the hour right before I go to bed a media free zone. So my phone and tablet are away from me and my TV is off. I sleep more soundly because of that, and I wake up with a clear head. I also spend less time in bed after I wake up, because I’m not as tired. Now I’m not perfect and there are nights when I stay up too late working on a video, blog post, or promotion, but I still turn everything off before I go to sleep. Bonus…waking up to a quiet, peaceful room makes it very easy to transition into meditation.

Get dressed

It’s easy to spend the day in PJs. In truth, I think everyone needs an occasional pajama day, they’re just cozy. As a rule, though, I do make sure that I get dressed on my days off. I comb my hair and even put make up on. I don’t even have to be going any where. I just think that it works wonders for my self-esteem if I like what I see when I look in the mirror. Getting dressed is the perfect way to take a little bit of time during the day to focus on yourself.

There you go! 10 simple ways to take care of yourself everyday! You can try them all or just implement a few each day. Whatever you do, make sure you make taking care of yourself a priority. I read a quote somewhere that says, “When you take care of yourself, your loved ones get the best of you…not the rest of you.”

I’ll drop the mic right there.
